Since the first official ride of the tour was to start on Sunday, we had the day to explore Asheville and do an optional ride around town sponsored by some local cyclists.

The Health Adventure
We chose to ride the Biltmore/Asheville ride, a 30 mile tour of the area around the Biltmore Estate and the city of Asheville. CNC headquarters was located at Christ School, just south of town. The roads around Asheville are relatively bike friendly, although there don't seem to be many wide shoulders or bike lanes.
Pre-ride meeting
The roads through Biltmore Forest, and exclusive residential district, were lightly traveled and very scenic. The group stopped for a while in downtown Asheville before heading back to the school. On the return trip the group split and we saw almost none of the other riders.

We had a good, inexpensive dinner at Doc Chey's Noodle House after a brief visit to the Asheville Art Museum. Later we returned to the school for the orientation meeting where the tour organizer, Amanda Stinson, and her crew briefed us on the week ahead. She noted that the average age of the riders was 50, that about 1200 had signed up, and the youngest rider was 7 years old. 79% of the riders were men, 21% women.

While doing research for this report I stumbled across two other accounts of rider's experiences on Cycle North Carolina 2005:
