Bottom Brackets
Previous | NextToday there was lot of material to cover on various topics: Used Wheel Repair, Tires and Tubes, Repair Stands, Bottom Brackets, and Cranks. Evans was the instructor and he passed on many useful tips and tricks for troubleshooting wheel problems.
We lightly touched on the confusing subject of tire sizes and the importance of the ISO standard. Earlier this year I wrote an article on tire and rim sizes for the shop Web site, so I'm familiar with the topic. Without some prior experience, it would be difficult to absorb all of the material presented during the day on not only tires, but the various types of pedals, bottom brackets, and cranks.
We overhauled a cup and cone bottom bracket, and removed and installed a sealed bottom bracket. I also discovered the relatively new two-piece cranks made by Shimano (Hollowtech, and Hollowtech II), Race Face, and others. On some the bearings are located outside the BB shell, and there is a large diameter, hollow spindle, making for a lightweight, strong bottom bracket.
During my morning walk I picked up a couple of real estate fliers and discovered that house prices were as high in this small town as they are here in the DC area. I suspect that many boomer retirees are flocking here for the relatively mild temperatures, attractive downtown, and nearby skiing and hiking areas.
