During this holiday season it seems even more important than usual to be in touch with friends and family. Kerie and I are both doing well despite the uncertain times here in the Washington D.C. area. I am working part-time for Fairfax County Supervisor Cathy Hudgins doing web development, press relations, and the semi-annual newsletter (www.fairfaxcounty.gov/huntermill/). I work about half the time at home and for the other half I bicycle commute to the County office nearby. The rest of my time seems to be spent on work related to a trails committee and the local land use committee.
Kerie celebrated 20 years with the U.S. Geological Survey, the past 10 doing GIS work with the National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA). She is also fortunate to be able to bicycle commute to her Reston office. Linda Mecklenburg, Kerie's sister, was on the gold medal American team at the World Dog Agility Championships in Portugal.
This year we took a long anticipated trip to the Utah canyonlands. We signed up for a bicycle tour with Timberline Tours out of Denver, run by Dick and Carol, two aging hipsters who run a fun but sometimes loose ship. I wrote up a report of the trip and included some photos at www.restondigital.com/utah/. We also participated in our 6th Bike Virginia, a large group tour promoting cycling in the state. This year we started in the town of Front Royal and wound our way through the foothills of the Blue Ridge, stopping briefing to visit with our friends Kirby and Ann Nelson near Warrenton, and with my sister Linda Shotwell and her family who live near Amissville.
Kerie's mother Billie is doing as well as can be expected at a home for Alzheimer's patients. The home is about 10 miles away and we often cycle there for a visit, using our NiteRider bike lights in the wintertime.
We look forward to spending the holidays with my parents, sister Sandy from California and brother Dick and his family at his house in Nashville. With luck this warm winter weather will hold and Kerie and I will be able get in one last bike ride before the end of the year.
