There wasn't much time to do anything in Las Vegas since the Timberline van to St. George was due at noon. I took a long walk around the block, through some rundown two-story apartment buildings. In a city where almost no one walks beyond the Strip, proximity to the Strip doesn't mean much. Most of the better housing is located beyond the center city, and the more close in areas are left to the casinos and the service workers, very similar to Atlantic City.
We met two of our tour leaders, Christina and Nancy. This is one of the rare tours on which there are three leaders, and Nola was already in St. George. We picked up Steve, Cathy, Silvey, Jonas, and Janice at the airport and slowly make our way to I-15 after unintentionally touring the city a few times. Once on I-15 it's a quick two hour drive to St. George, especially at 85 mph. Speeds both in and outside of the cities are definitely faster out West.
Getting the bikes put together and ready to ride is usually a painless operation. Both bikes can be put together in a few minutes. We put Kerie's stem in the head tube, and it was hard getting it as tight as it should be. I had to use a lot of torque. Then, when tightening the seat bolt, the same torque was used. Big mistake. I heard a crack, and realized that I'd broken the bolt. Nola came over with a bag of bolts, and we did our best to find a match, but none threaded properly. One came close, and along with a set of washers, seemed to hold the seat tight. Meanwhile everyone was gathered for dinner, so we missed the obligatory 30-second life story session, but were able to eat with the rest of the group.
