Southern Utah Bike Tour

October 4, 2001 - Bryce to Mt. Carmel Junction, 60 miles | Map

Today's ride took us back through Red Canyon. We picked up the bike trail after the short climb from Ruby's Inn, and had a fun downhill ride through the canyon. We only took a few pictures this time through, although the sunlight was ideal. The ride was mostly downhill, from about 7800 feet at Bryce to 5210 feet at Mt. Carmel Junction. The traffic on Route 89 wasn't as bad as I had expected, and there was a good shoulder for most of the trip.

I stopped to take a few pictures, including one of this stone building, possibly in Glendale. The terrain was mostly desert scrub with mountains in the distance. Lunch was at one of the few stores along the route, part of the Amoco gas station, where we had soggy white-bread sandwiches. From there it was downhill to Mt. Carmel Junction. Along the way we passed two groups of high school kids in a run honoring the Sept. 11 victims. They were running between two local towns about 10 miles apart. Each group started at the respective towns and would meet in the middle and then continue on to the destination town.

Our destination for the day was the Thunderbird Motel. Part of the motel complex included a par 3 golf course in the middle of this desert landscape. It turned out to be a fairly nice place, and the meal that we were warned would consist mostly of fried foods, wasn't bad. The obligatory vegetarian dish of soggy pasta wasn't great, but the other dishes all appeared edible. Before dinner Jonas and Janice decided to play a round of golf, and the ever adventurous Silvey joined them. I spent a little time doing a couple of small landscape watercolors.
