Flagler Beach to Daytona Beach

Previous | Next

Our motel, the Holiday Inn Express, was located about a mile or so from where the route passed, so we joined a couple of other cyclists to ride on busy Route 100 to the route. This shortened the ride by about 10 miles. It was a pleasant enough ride on the Old Dixie Highway to Gamble Rogers State Park for a stroll along the beach and later to Tomoka State Park where we took a short walk to view the strange Native American-inspired Chief Tomoke sculpture.

We stopped at the Flagler Beach Museum after the route looped back through town. As we passed through Palm Coast we noticed the Art Lamay Studio where we viewed the excellent wildlife paintings and talked to the artist. He was familiar with Reston, having lived in Great Falls for many years. He reminisced about great meals he used to eat at L'Auberge Chez Francois where his friend Jacques is the Chef de Cuisine.

We rode through downtown Daytona on the way to the Hampton Inn. There was little traffic in town, which appeared to be recovering from Bike Week, the yearly spring invasion of motorcyclists, most of whom had left a week or so before our arrival. We checked out the exhibits outside Jackie Robinson Ballpark where Jackie Robinson played his first spring training game for the Dodgers on March 17, 1946.
